WELCOME NOTE FROM DEAN

Thank you for choosing the Faculty of Language and Literature as a place for developing your career. Our vision is clear and we are committed to helping our students achieve their future goals.

Almost all of the teachers in the Faculty of Language and Literature are MA and PhD holders from well-known universities in Indonesia, Australia, USA, United Kingdom, and Japan.

Apart from teaching and helping the students, our teachers are also active in conducting research, presenting in national and international seminars, as well as doing community services. We also have some native speakers of English who are experienced in teaching English as a foreign language.

English is the medium of instruction in almost all of the classes in the Faculty of Language and Literature. Some of our classes are conducted in small groups in order to match with the nature of learning a foreign language. Our teaching and learning facilities are developed to support the teaching and learning processes and to give the students an opportunity to practice and work independently or in small groups inside or outside the classrooms.

Our curriculum is constantly improved to adjust to the most current approach in language teaching and literature. For the first two years the students will have to spend most of their time improving their proficiency in speaking, reading, listening, writing, and grammar. After that, the students will have to focus more on studying teaching methods, teaching practice, linguistics, literature, research methodology, as well as elective courses (the subjects of their choices). Finally, the students will write their theses in English.

We see our students as partners and democratic explorers. Thus, we will not say, "I'm in charge!" We believe that mutual trust and respect between the students and teachers are important. Our experience has proven that this type of learning processes is likely to lead to growth and development for the teachers as well as all of the students.

From all of these, it is not surprising that we received A (very good) from BAN- PT (Badan Akreditasi Nasional Perguruan Tinggi). However, for us improving the quality of our teachers and staff, curriculum, teaching and learning processes, as well as learning facilities is a never-ending process. We are committed to not only becoming one of the best English departments in Indonesia but also becoming internationally known.

Welcome to the big family of the Faculty of Language and Literature of Satya Wacana Christian University.

Hendro Setiawan Husada, MA

The Dean of the Faculty of Language and Literature
